Course Introduction

The course examines techniques in plant propagation and horticultural care. The functional applications of plants including environmental improvement, ornamental, medicinal, cultural and other uses in landscape planting design, are explored within both historical and contemporary schemes. Students are introduced to a systematic approach to planting design and some of the basic technical, administrative and management aspects of landscape planting.

Project 1 - Plant Reference

This assignment is about preparing a collection of trees and plants based on the species covered in the various site walks and the Basic Plant List provided. Students will collect photographs and information about plants and present this information in class and post it onto a collective website. Plant identification quizzes about selective species will then be issued to test students' understanding.

Project 2 - Plant Sections

Students are required to measure and describe by hand drawing a plan and section of an allotted area on the university campus, indicating accurately the types, locations, dimensions and growth habits of the existing trees and other vegetation. By accurately measuring and drawing the horizontal and vertical dimensions and characteristics of the vegetation in their allotted study area, students will gain an appreciation of the real growth patterns of various plant types and the way they interact and respond to neighboring vegetation and man-made structures.

Project 3 - Plant Details

This assignment requires students to carry out a planting orientated design in a given imaginative context. The site is an internal courtyard within a four-storey high office building in Hong Kong. The occupier of the building is a middle level, but ambitious, new engineering firm.

Design theme: The intention is for the courtyard space to act as both an internal backdrop to the company activities when viewed through the windows and as an external relaxation area for workers to go during the day during lunch or other breaks. The firm operates normal daylight working hours. Large gatherings are not anticipated.

Design layout: The courtyard may be laid out in any way student consider appropriate, noting normal operational requirements for the building. The design addressed the entire courtyard area. The ratio of planting to hard paved spaces follow given percentages.
